MY UNCLE EBENEZER
(from “Kidnapped” by R.L. Stevenson)
Soon I heard the noise of locks and chains, and the door was carefully opened. “Go into the kitchen,” said the man who opened the door, “and don´t touch anything.”
I went in. He started locking the door and putting all the chains back on it again. While he was doing that, I went forward in the dark and came into the kitchen. The fire was burning bright there and I could see a big room, almost empty.
A table was set for supper with only a bowl of porridge, a spoon and a cup of beer. Some chests stood by the wall and a cupboard in one of the corners. There were big locks on them.
The man came into the kitchen. He was a small, bent, narrow-shouldered old man, somewhere from fifty to seventy years old. His night cap was of flannel and so eras his night-gown. His eyes were on me.
“Are you hungry?” he asked. “You can eat that porridge.”
“But isn’t this your own supper?” I asked.
“I’ll drink the beer,” he answered.
He drank about half the cup, watching me all the time.
Then suddenly he held out his band. “Let me see the letter,” he said.
I told him the letter was for Mr. Balfour, not for him.
“And who do you think I am?" be asked. “Give me Alexander’s letter. He was my brother. You don´t seem to like me or my house, or my porridge but I am your uncle Ebenexer, Davie. Give me the letter.”
Tears almost came to my eyes. I said nothing and I gave him the letter.
My uncle, bending over the lire, turned the letter over in his hands.
“What’s in it?” he asked.
“I don’t know, sir. You can see the letter is not opened.”
“Yes,” he said. “But why did you come? I think you want me to help you, don´t you?”
“I came to give you the letter.” I said. “But I don’t want any help that is not freely given. I have friends who will gladly help me.”
“Now don’t get angry, ” said uncle Ebenexer. ...
