Pirates - sea (or river) robbers. The word "pirate" (lat. Pirata) occurs, in turn, from the Greek. πειρατής, single-rooted from the word πειράω ( «try, to experience"). Thus, the meaning of the word is "try his luck". Etymology shows how shaky was from the very beginning of the line between occupations explorer and pirate.
The word came into use about in IV-III centuries BC. e., and before that it was used the term "leystes", known to Homer, and is closely associated with concepts such as robbery, murder, mining.
